The long open sweep of sand at Karon Beach

Karon Beach

A long, wide, open beach with room to breathe

Karon is the long, straight beach immediately south of Patong — about three kilometres of fine, pale sand that famously squeaks underfoot. A road and a line of low dunes run behind most of it, so the beach feels open and uncluttered even though large resorts sit just across the street.

It is calmer than Patong and a little less polished than Kata, with a cluster of restaurants and shops at the northern roundabout and another at the southern end near Kata. Families, couples and repeat visitors make up most of the crowd.

Top things to do: Karon Beach

Walk the whole beach

End to end takes about 45 minutes on firm sand. The southern end is the most sheltered and has the best snorkelling around the rocks in the dry season; the middle is the emptiest.

Karon Temple market

Wat Suwan Khiri Khet, the small temple behind the northern end, hosts a local market on some evenings each week with street food and clothing stalls. Ask your hotel which days it is on.

Karon Viewpoint

A short drive south past Kata, this hilltop pavilion looks north over three bays at once — Kata Noi, Kata and Karon. See our viewpoints guide.

Day trips

Karon is well placed for boat trips: the piers at Chalong are about 20 minutes away, and every Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay tour includes pickup here.

How to get to Karon Beach

  • From the airport: roughly 60–80 minutes by road. The Phuket Smart Bus continues south from Patong through Karon.
  • From Phuket Town: blue songthaews to Karon and Kata leave from Ranong Road during the day.
  • From Patong: about 15–20 minutes by taxi over the hill.

Insider tips

  • Karon has some of the strongest rip currents on the island in the monsoon months. Drownings happen here every year; a red flag means stay out, however calm it looks.
  • There is little natural shade on the sand. Bring an umbrella or rent one, and go early or late.
  • The beach is long, so check which end your hotel is at — the north and south clusters are a 30-minute walk apart.

Karon Beach FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Karon better than Patong?

It depends what you want. Karon has a longer, emptier beach and a quieter atmosphere; Patong has far more nightlife, shopping and choice. They are only 15–20 minutes apart, so many people stay in Karon and visit Patong.

Can you swim at Karon Beach?

From about November to April the sea is usually calm and clear. From May to October there are often large waves and rip currents, and swimming is frequently prohibited.

Can you walk from Karon to Kata?

Yes. The southern end of Karon is a 10–15 minute walk from the northern end of Kata along the road.
